WAR CEMETERIES

AUSTRALIAN PILGRIMAGE.

(United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright.)

(Rec. 7 p.m.) Paris, April 6. The Mayor of Villers Bretonneux in welcoming the Australian representatives visiting the cemetery, said: “Your children lie buried in a ground hallowed by their gallantry. We revere their memory equally with our own dead.”

Mr Ferguson, one of the visiting Australians, said he was amazed to see how rebuilding had changed the entire contour of the country from what it was when he fought within half a mile of it.

The Australians visited the various cemeteries and memorials on the battlefields.

The defence of Villers Bretonneux by Australian troops against the German drive 16 years ago was commcmorated yesterday, the anniversary of this battle. The Agents-General and representatives of the various Australian States and the Commonwealth were received by the Mayor of the French town, which was “adopted” by the City of Melbourne.
