LUMSDEN NOTES

The weather during the Easter holidays was ideal, making conditions pleasant for those who spent the weekend camping. Numerous cars passed through the township on their way to the camping sites about the southern lakes. Women’s Division. On Wednesday . afternoon Mrs G. A. Hamilton presided over a large meeting of members of the Lumsden branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. It was stated that at the annual meeting Miss Reid, the Home Science demonstrator, would be present to give a lantern lecture on “Dress.” It was also decided to invite members of Dipton and Balfour branches to be present. Mossburn ladies were to be asked to cater for the next sale, after which districts were to take turns in catering. Mrs W. H. Ward gave an interesting talk on the proposed dressmaking circles to be formed for which threepence an hour for nine hours would be charged. She also explained the variations in the management of the Countrywoman. Mrs Warnock, of Seaward Downs, gave a demonstration on the making of moccasins from felt hats and velvet and at the conclusion of the demonstration Mesdames Hamilton and Ward thanked Mrs Warnock for the very interesting demonstration. Snowball Afternoon. On Thursday afternoon the members of the Plunket Committee conducted another most successful afternoon, the hostesses being Mesdames Marshall, Welsh and Bain. Competitions held during the afternoon were won by Mrs Welsh (2), Mrs Dore (1) and Mrs Keown (1). Dance. On Wednesday evening the residents of Lumsden assembled in the Masonic Hall as the guests of Mr and Mrs W. Johnson, who have recently returned from their honeymoon tour. The evening was spent in dancing, and after supper Mr A. Heath, chairman of the Town Board, on behalf of the residents of Lumsden, welcomed home Mr and Mrs Johnson and conveyed to them the best wishes of all. Other speakers were the Rev. Mr Wilson (Anglican Church), Messrs Gray, Menlove, C. Welsh and E. Wildey. Mr Johnson thanked the speakers for their good wishes. Personal. Mr and Mrs Grant, Christchurch, are spending a few days with Mr and Mrs D. Rowe, West Dome, Mossbum. Miss Eileen Wilson, of the staff of St. George Hospital, Christchurch, is a guest at the vicarage. Mr and Mrs Black and Miss Black are visiting Dunedin and Christchurch. Mr and Mrs F. Stewart are spending their annual leave on the West Coast. Miss A. Brotherston, Otara, was the guest of her mother, Mrs W. Brotherston, during the Easter holidays. Mr and Mrs James Clouston spent the Easter holidays at Tapanui. Messrs A. E. Johnson, Napier, and Charles Trott, Wellington, are the guests of Mrs G. F. Johnson. Mr J. Conley, Dunedin, is the guest of Mrs T. A. Menzies. Miss W. Birss, Dunedin, is visiting Mrs Lionel Graham. Mrs E. Brown is spending a few weeks at Timaru.
