PLUNKET SHIELD CANTERBURY V. AUCKLAND SOUTHERNERS MAKE 252 (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, January 8. The Plunket Shield match between Auckland and Canterbury was continued to-day in ideal conditions. The visitors gave a disappointing display and were dismissed on a splendid wicket for 252 runs. The Auckland batting was bright and in an hour’s play before stumps scored 82 for one wicket.

Kerr and Bellamy gave Canterbury a good start, compiling 59 for the first wicket. Hadlee, Page and Smith all shaped like getting runs, but the best innings was played by Cromb. He scored 59 and was always confident. Lester followed with bright batting, although he was rather lucky with his drives. At one stage he hit 20 off one of Vivian’s overs, including three fours and a six. The Auckland bowling was always very steady, although not so good as the figures indicate. Vivian batted particularly well for Auckland, but the visitors’ attack was not impressive. The scores were: CANTERBURY. First Innings. G. L. Kerr c Wallace b Vivian 45 F. Bellamy b Vivian 19 I. B. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Calcutta, January 7. The second Test between India and the M.C.C. team was resumed to-day. India failed to save a follow-on by seven runs after a fighting innings. The hero of the day was Hussein who, though injured yesterday, batted for three hours and became top scorer. He was injured again when Clarke and Nichols bumped the ball and he threw his wicket away. Merchant also held the fort for nearly three hours against excellent bowling and smart fielding. Altogether India’s batting was a decided improvement on the first Test, and unless the crumbling wicket helps Clarke and Nichols to-morrow India should force a draw. Following are the scores: M.C.C.
