There was beautiful weather and the greens were in good order for the opening day of the Dominion bowling championship and there were 88 competitors in the singles on 11 greens. Only one representative from Southland, W. Irvine, of Edendale, a very versatile player, has survived, and his only defeat was at the hands of an old Southland player now of Phoenix, Oamaru, D. Thomson. Irvine meets Ure, of Ponsonby, on the keen Caledonian green in the fifth round and the Edendale representative should play one of his best games. Weir (Orepuki) seemed unable to get into his stride on the Roslyn green, though in his second game againgst Buchanan (Christchurch) he looked like winning until a four in the later stages settled his chances. Chaplin (Edendale) lost the first and fourth games, but beat a very consistent player in Thomas, of Sumner, in his second, and accounted for another Christchurch player in his third, only to go down to that good player Alloo, of Roslyn, in the final game. There was no disgrace in being defeated by a player of Claridge’s (Caledonian) calibre, but Hickey, of the same club as Irvine, made amends by disposing of Smellie (Green Island). This was a good win, as was also his defeat of Buchanan (Christchurch), by a substantial margin, and it was left for Buist, of Phoenix, to administer the coup de grace in the fourth round. The Edendale Club can be congratulated on the showing made by their representatives.

One of the best games to-morrow morning will be that between E. Harraway (Dunedin), who is bowling up to his best form and the runner-up in the 1932 singles, C. Tyrrell, of Roslyn. This game will be sure to attract a big following.

There are 10 two and 43 one lifers left. Of this total the Dunedin district hold a strong hand, having 28 representatives left to do battle for the coveted title.

A great game was witnessed on the North East Valley green in the fourth round when E. Harraway defeated Maxwell Walker (Auckland) by a narrow margin, the Dunedin player drawing the kitty away from Walker’s winning bowls to make the game secure. It was a game of splendid drawing, counteracted by aggressiveness on the part of the winner.
