ATTACKED BY SHARK
VICTIM’S LEG AMPUTATED. RESCUES IN ROUGH SURF. (United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright.) Sydney, January 8. The shark victim, Colin Grant, aged 22, a former surf and belt champion, swam ashore unaided, though the calf of his leg had been torn away. The leg was amputated below the knee. Hundreds of rescues were made by the patrols in the rough surf which is running at all the beaches. A number of bathers were injured when they were carried against the rocks at the end of the beach.
A shark attacked Grant at Queenscliff, near Manly, and he was so badly mauled on one leg that amputation was imperative. The captain of the lifesaving club gave blood transfusion in the hope of saving his life.
