THE SOUTHERN CROSS

FLIGHT ACROSS TASMAN.

MAIL NOT YET AUTHORIZED.

(United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.55 p.m.) Sydney, January 8. The Southern Cross will undergo tests to-morrow and the hope is entertained that the flight to New Zealand will begin on Thursday morning from Richmond aerodrome. A number of letters have been received at Sir Charles Kingsford Smith’s hangar from New Zealand correspondents who ask that these should be included in the first air mail across the Tasman. The postal authorities here are being consulted, as so far no air mail arrangements have been authorized. Sir Charles expects that will come later.

LADY KINGSFORD SMITH ARRIVAL ON SATURDAY. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, January 8. According to a cablegram received by Mr Wilfred Kingsford Smith, who is in Auckland, Lady Kingsford Smith will leave Sydney by the Monterey on Wednesday and will arrive at Auckland on Saturday morning. It is probable she will leave by air for New Plymouth immediately after her arrival to meet her husband, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, who will leave Richmond Aerodrome, Sydney, at 3 a.m. on Thursday on his trans-Tasman flight in the monoplane Southern Cross. Sir Charles is expected to reach New Plymouth at 7 p.m., New Zealand time. Although the airman will leave Sydney a day after his wife, according to schedule, he will arrive at New Plymouth two days earlier.
