LUMSDEN NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.)

In common with other districts the Christmas holidays were marred by the bad weather, hail and snow showers being frequent during the weekend. However, the weather during the New Year was much kinder, hot days and bright sunshine making it most enjoyable. The swimming pool and tennis courts were the chief attraction, although a number of residents made a one-day trip to the Eglinton Valley. The year 1934 was ushered in quietly in Lumsden. As New Year’s Eve was Sunday night there was an absence of engine whistles, but the time-honoured custom of first footing was kept up, most of the homes being visited by parties who had dispensed with all thoughts of depression and looked forward to brighter times in the New Year.

Mr and Mrs Wale, Wellington, and the Misses West (2), Dunedin, are the guests of Mrs W. Patterson. Miss Wynne, Wellington, spent the holidays with Mrs Casson. Mr Lance Johnson, Wellington, is spending his annual holidays in Lumsden.

Miss Horne, Christchurch, and Miss Gill, Invercargill, are the guests of Miss L. Johnson.

Miss Menzies, Masterton, is the guest of Mrs T. A. Menzies.

Miss W. Birss, Dunedin, is the guest of Mrs Lionel Graham.

Mr and Mrs J. Clouston, accompanied by Miss Helen Clouston and Miss Payne, are spending the New Year holidays in the Eglinton Valley. Miss Smith, Roxburgh, is visiting Mrs E. Wilson, the Vicarage. Mr and Mrs W. Taylor, who spent the Christmas holidays with Mrs A. Leitch, have returned to Dunedin. Miss Brotherston has gone to Timaru for a few days. Misses L. Vial and L. Aitken are the guests of Mrs H. Aitken. Mr and Mrs Shuttleworth and family are camping in the Eglinton Valley. Mrs Hardy, Christchurch, arrived on Monday to spend a holiday with Mrs Gilkison, Castlerock. Mr and Mrs Frank Menzies, Christchurch, are the guests of Mrs T. A. Menzies.

Mrs Thompson, Sawyers Bay, Miss Laing, Dunedin, and Miss Newman, Roslyn, are spending the holidays in Lumsden as guests of Mrs John Marshall. Weather Summary. For the month of December rain fell on ten days out of the 31. The greatest fall was on the 23rd when 165 points were registered for 12 hours of continuous showers. The total fall was 3.68 inches in comparison with 4.43 inches for December, 1932. During the first

two-thirds of the month, the atmospheric conditions were warm and dry with frequent northwesters and shade temperatures as high as 84. For the latter third totally different conditions were prevalent. There were abundant showers, interspersed with sleet and hail. On the 28th the thermometer dropped to 43 degrees and the hilltops had a mantle of snow. In six days 3.34 inches of rain fell and the warm noi-thwesterlies were supplanted by cold southerlies. Following is a summary of the rainfall for 1933, with that for 1932 in
