HIGH SCHOOL

OLD BOYS’ ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the 'Southland High School Old Boys’ Association was held in the Federal Lounge last evening, the president, Mr J. G. Imlay, presiding over an attendance of fifteen members. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, Mr Imlay said that although the attendance was not a representative one the past year had been quite successful. The various clubs which had some connection with the activities of the association had shown their increasing strength on the fields of sport in Invercargill. Although the first grade football team were narrowly defeated on numerous occasions, they were destined to prove an important factor in future contests and would bring renewed credit to the association and materially assist in strengthening that body. These teams were handicapped because most of their promising players left the city to attend universities and colleges in other parts of the Dominion. The executive had carried out a splendid programme of works during the past year. The fives courts at the High School were now in the process of construction due to the persistent agitation of the association. Many trees were planted at the school which would in the future add dignity to the grounds and. at the same time perpetuate the activities of the association. Mr Imlay said he thought the time was approaching when the formation of an Old Boys’ Tennis Club should be considered. It was pleasing to note that a branch of the association had been formed in Christchuch, and he hoped that this institution would grow into a strong body. The balance-sheet showed a healthy position, the receipts being in advance of those of the previous year which was quite satisfactory under the prevailing conditions. He thanked the secretary for his excellent work during the year and the executive members for their hearty co-operation in carrying on the work of the association during a strenuous period.

The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—Patron, past and present chairman of the Board of Governors and the rector; president, Mr J. G. Imlay; vice-presidents, Messrs S. M. Macalister, T. R. .Pryde, J. F. Strang, J. D. Shand, C. E. Borne, R. J. Gilmour, A. W. Jones, R. Brownlie, J. Gilkison, J. A. Fraser, W. Stewart, E. A. Nichol, J. A. Hamilton, A. L. Adamson, J. H. Reed and Jules Tapper; secretary and treasurer, Mr R. McKelvey; assistant secretary, Mr M. Henderson; committee, Messrs J. L. Cameron, A. G. Harrington, G. R. Hanan, H. G. Sutton, E. Smith, A. S. Bissett, B. Peterson and the following representatives of the sports clubs: Messrs J. E. Salisbury (swimming), E. R. Smythe (cricket), P. Lynch (football), and L. B. Smith (gymnastics); auditor, Mr H. R. Willcox.

A motion of sympathy was passed with relatives of the late Professor J. W. Hinton, Messrs K. Lumsden and S. Jack.

It was decided to continue with the erection of honours boards at the school as the association considered much good could be accomplished in cementing the traditions of the school by such a practice. The matter of providing a'club-room for the use of members was the subject of a discussion, many members expressing the opinion that the time was ripe for such an institution and that it would assist in keeping club members together and the association alive. It was finally decided as a recommendation to. the incoming executive that the procuring of a suitable club room be proceeded with provided the necessary support was forthcoming.
