MATAURA NEWS

CRICKET CLUB. (From Our Correspondent.) Tlie annual meeting of the Mataura Cricket Club as held in the Coronation Hall on Monday evening the president, Mr J. H. Clark, presiding over a large attendance of members and intending members. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet (already published) the president commented on the sound financial position and expressed gratification at the manner in which the competition trophy was travelling about the various clubs. In this connection it was unfortunate that the competition was divided by the Wednesday and Saturday half-holidays, Mataura being particularly unfortunate in this respect as it had difficulty in fielding teams on both days. In conclusion he expressed the hope that the holiday question would soon be settled definitely. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: Patron, Mr A. N. Saturday October 7 was fixed as opening day. Arising out of a letter received from the Town Clerk, Mataura, requesting the names of three delegates to attend a combined committee meeting to further the proposal to erect a women’s rest room, it was decided that Messrs J. H. Clark, T. P. Bogue and J. Maley should represent the club.

In vacating the chair in Mr Maley’s favour, Mr Clark trusted he would have a pleasant term of office. Mr Maley thanked members for the honour done him and appealed for the whole-hearted support of all. He desired to move a hearty vote of thanks to the retiring president and called upon those present to give three cheers for Mr Clark. These were heartily given, Mr Clark acknowledging the compliment. A vote of thanks was accorded the Mataura Citizens’_ Tennis Club for the use of its pavilion for the club’s lady members throughout the season. Mr Martin introduced the question of a junior or B grade competition and on his recommendation the delegates to the association were instructed to move in the direction of having a junior or B grade competition instituted.
