THEFT CHARGES
COMPANY DIRECTOR. COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, July 21. The hearing of the theft charges against James Millward Houston was continued to-day. Charles A. Delberry, accountant of John Bums and Company, said he discovered discrepancies in the stock sheet of the Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin branches for which discrepancies it was alleged the accused was responsible. Investigations revealed that 171 machines included in the branch returns of stock submitted by the accused were not in stock and that they had been sold. Detective Mills said he interviewed the accused on June 29. The accused said: “I deny stealing any money, the property of Burns and Company. Any declaration I have to make I will make to the Judge.” The accused reserved his defence and was sent for trial, bail being fixed at £5OO, with sureties of £350 and £l5O. He is to report daily to the police.
