COURT AMUSED
THE MAIN TRUNK RAILWAY.
JUDGE AND A WITNESS.
(Per United Press Association.) Blenheim, July 21. Some amusement at the expense of Marlborough’s long deferred hope of seeing the South Main Trunk railway completed was occasioned in the Compensation Court this morning when A. J. Murray, of Clarence Bridge, was giving evidence in the Dashwood deyiation case concerning the risks arising out of grass fires caused by sparks from railway engines. “I may say I had no experience of fires started by railway engines,” witness confessed. Mr A. A. McNab: In fact you have been disappointed in the anticipated experience?—“Yes,” agreed witness, rather ruefully. , “I am afraid you will be disappointed for a long time to come Mr Murray, observed his Honour, Mr Justice Ostler. “I hope you will at any rate. „ “Don’t say that, your Honour, pleaded Mr McNab. “It is almost a sacrilege to say that here.” (Laughter.) His Honour: The view of a North Islander, eh? Mr McNab: I think they define them as Aucklanders here, sir. (Renewed laughter.)
