BRUTALITY IN VIENNA UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ATTACKED NAZI OUTRAGES (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright!) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) London, May 10. The Vienna correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says that anti-Jewish riots of exceptional brutality have started at Vienna University. Thirty students were injured, including seven American doctors studying in Vienna who lodged a protest with the American Consulate.

The police stopped disorders in the streets, but an ancient privilege prevented them from going to the university, where Nazi students, armed with sticks studded with nails, attacked Jewish, Socialist and foreign students who jumped from windows into the streets, their faces often streaming with blood. A serious aspect of the Austrian situation is that the civil service is undermined by the Nazi movement. A message from Munich states that Fritz Dressel, leader of the Communists in the Bavarian Diet, committed suicide at the Dachau concentration camp. Hans Heimler, a Communist member of the Reichstag, sensationally escaped from the camp, despite a high fence with barbed wire charged with electricity. GERMAN ENVOY VISIT TO LONDON. PLAIN BRITISH SPEAKING. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, May 9. Herr Rosenberg, Herr Hitler’s envoy, conferred with Sir John Simon, Lord Hailsham and Mr Norman Davis (United States). Herr Rosenberg wanted to ascertain Britain’s reactions to Hitlerism. His conference with Mr Davis lasted two hours. It is understood the latter emphasized that America under no circumstances would consent to Germany,s rearmament and regarded Germany's Geneva policy as an obstacle in the path of the Disarmament Conference, consequently casting a shadow over the World Conference. Furthermore, America considered Germany was tending to become a disturber of European peace. The Sun Service understands that the British Ministers did not mince their words, but stressed the nationwide condemnation, regardless of political parties, and emphasized Britain, s perturbation concerning Hitlerism s effect on disarmament. Captain Goering, the Chief of Police, has issued a decree severing the connection between the armed police and the Storm Troops and Steel Helmets and restricting the power of arrests to the police. The public is surprised at the execution of three murderers. Death sentences under the late regime were almost automatically commuted to penal servitude. It is explained that it is part of Herr Hitler’s policy to restore the respect of the people for German justice. PROPERTY SEIZED ACTION BY GOVERNMENT. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 12.30 a.m.) Berlin, May 10. The Government has seized the entire property and funds of the social democrats and Republican, Reichsbanner and Socialist newspapers. BURNING BOOKS NAZIS CLEANSE LIBRARIES. Berlin, April 29. A Nazi decree orders a committee to examine public libraries throughout the city and cleanse them of “Marxist anti-national rubbishy literature,” including works by famous Liberals and pacifists and also books dealing with the Soviet, all of which will be publicly burned. Students in German universities have been ordered to erect “a monument of disgrace,” in the form of a tree trunk, to which will be pinned “un-German” writings and the works of Germans participating in the anti-German “atrocity campaign.” The Senate of the Free City of Hamburg will withhold the century-old Lessing poetry prize because Lessing was a Jew, and will substitute a prize named after Herr Sckardt, an ex-editor of the Nazi newspaper Volkische Beobachter. In pursuance of their policy of unification, the Nazis have appointed a commission to administer the Rhineland and Westphalian Bankers’ Association. Practically every organization in the Rhineland except religious ones is dominated by the Nazis, who even have seized the hairdressers’ organization. The Prussian Minister for Education has ordered that English must be the chief foreign language taught in the schools instead of French.
