Mrs D. Ogilvy, of Lumsden, is the guest of Miss Heads, Park street. Mr and Mrs R. Watson, of Kaitangata, are spending a holiday with Mrs I. N. Watson, East Winton. Mrs T. Hamilton and her daughters, Brenda and Mary, of Oreti, have returned home after spending a holiday in the north. Miss Reah Mitchell, of Balclutha, was the guest of Mrs C. D. Moore recently. Mrs A. Cole, of Invercargill, has been spending a holiday with her mother, Mrs I. N. Watson. Miss Maisie McKenzie, of Lady Barkly, who has been visiting Timaru, returned home last week. Miss Betty Joyce is spending a holiday at Balfour. Miss I. McKenzie, of Lady Barkly, is the guest of Miss Leone Barker Miss Gwen Cowie, of Invercargill, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr and Mrs F. Cowie, Matai. Mrs R. Butt and family, of Makarewa, have returned from a holiday spent in Timaru. At the St. Thomas’s Tennis Club euchre social on Thursday evening last the winners were Mrs D. F. O’Malley and Mr W. McLean. Miss A. Holland, of Invercargill, ■spent the week-end with her parents. Mrs Young, of Dunedin, is the guest of Mrs J. Banks, Meldrum street. Mr and Mrs R. Curtis, formerly of Invercargill, have taken up residence in Winton. Mesdames M. G. McArthur and Mrs Olive, of Invercargill, were visitors to Winton last week. On Friday evening a successful bridge party organized by the Social Committee of the Anglican Church was held in the Radio Tea Rooms. The winners of the first prizes were Mrs P. de la Perrelle and Mr W. Simmers, while Mr T. N. Mitchell was the winner of the hidden number prize. Those present included: —Mr and Mrs G. Davis.. A most enjoyable evening was spent, in games, cards, dancing and competitions, the winners of the latter being Miss H. Cowie, Mesdames Souness, T. Taylor and C. Corcoran, and Mr J. B. Cowie. Those present included: Mr and Mrs E. Davis, Mr and Mrs E. Hom, Mr and Mrs J. B. Cowie, Mr and Mrs Gibbs, Mr and Mrs J. T. Damill; Mesdames Souness, J. Doherty, C. Corcoran, T. Taylor; Misses M. Corcoran, H. Cowie, M. Tait, I. and A. Murphy, B. Gill, S. Birss, B. Taylor, O. Proctor; Messrs E. Souness, E. Taylor, N. Corcoran. On Friday evening last a welcome home dance was given in the South Hillend Hall to Mr and Mrs E. Bailey, who have just returned from the north. There was a large attendance of friends. Miss E. Langford, Mrs Proctor and Messrs Hunt brothers sang songs during the evening. Prior to leaving Winton, Mrs M. G. McArthur was the recipient of further presentations, on the last occasion from the Winton Athenaeum Committee and the Wipton Horticultural Society. Presentations of a string of amber beads and trinket box were made by Mrs J, R. Hamilton, who spoke on behalf of the Athenaeum Committee, and in doing so referred in eulogistic terms to Mrs McArthur’s long association

with the committee, both as a member and a reviewer of books. In similar terms, Mrs J. P. McWilliam, on behalf of the Horticultural Society, paid a tribute to - the departing member’s splendid work and enthusiastic interest in the society’s flower shows. Mrs McArthur made suitable response. Last Thursday evening the social committee of the Winton District High School gave a social in the Masonic Hall to celebrate the end of the term. Dancing, games and competitions were the order of the evening, the latter being won by Master Victor de la Perrelle. Music for the dancing was supplied by Miss Isobel Lindsay, and extras were played by Miss Colina Cox, Ruby Balch and Master Victor de la Pcrrelle. During the evening the Mayor, Mr T. Walker, president of the Winton Tennis Club, presented two silver cups, donated by Miss J. Ross, and two certificates to Miss Betty Mitchell and Master Lloyd Lindsay, the senior tennis champions for the 1932-33 season. The speaker mentioned that the Winton Tennis Club had granted the winners of the senior championships free membership to the club for the 1933-34 season. He also said that Miss Annie Murphy and Master James Robertson were the junior singles champions and each was to receive a Herbert Smith Trust silver cup. Mr W. Cleine suitably replied.
