■PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. (From Our Correspondent). Harvest thanksgiving services were held in the Mataura Presbyterian Church on Sunday, when the congregations were smaller than usual, owing to the inclemency of the weather. The Rev. D. McNeur occupied the pulpit and preached appropriate sermons. A feature of the services was the singing of anthems, solos and duets by. the choir, the soloists being Mrs O. Hubener, Messrs D. Russell and A. J. Jones. The fruit, vegetables, and goods given for display will in due course be forwarded to the superintendent of the Cameron Home, Invercargill. A successful social function took place at Waikaia on Thursday evening, the occasion being a coming of age party to Mr Sylvester Henderson, son of Mr and Mrs John Henderson. Besides district residents there was a large number of wellwishers from Mataura. Dancing to music by Messrs L. Stephenson (Mataura) violin, D. McDonald (accordeon) and lan Haggitt (violin) was kept going till about midnight, when supper was served. Subsequently Mr R. S. Williams congratulated the guest on attaining his 21st birthday, and conveyed to him the best wishes of the gathering. Returned Soldiers. The annual meeting of the. Mataura Returned Soldiers* Association was held in the Coronation Hall on Saturday evening, the president, Mr F. Clearwater, presiding. In moving the adoption of the annual report, the chairman stressed the need of a greater membership, and urged all present to do their utmost to attain this object. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Mr T. Richmond; vice-president, Mr N. R. Downard; secretary and treasurer, Mr lan Cullen; executive, Messrs L. McKelvie, A. Cockbum, I. Maslin, A. Richmond, R. A. Dickie, R. Hutton, L. H. Bowers and F. Clearwater. . The president and vice-president were also elected as representatives of the association on the local unemployment committee, while Mr A. H. Cockburn was again elected as representative on the Southland War Funds Association.

On the motion of the retiring president a hearty vote of appreciation of the excellent services rendered the association. by* Mr C. D. Smith who did not seek re-election to the committee, was carried by acclamation. It was decided to hold a re-union on similar lines to last year’s function and if that was a success also hold a reunion for members only.

Representatives of the Gore association, Messrs Gerken and Wilson, attended the meeting and made a number of suggestions regarding the conduct of the local branch. They stated that the New Zealand membership had increased by 45 for the year.
