WAIMATUKU NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) On Wednesday, May 3, a meeting of the Basketball Club was held' in the hall. The secretary reported that £3 19/4 remained in hand as a result of the euchre social held in April and 17/6 had been paid up to date in subscriptions. It was decided to purchase a ball and begin practices at the earliest opportunity. It was left to the president to arrange about the construction of posts. Following the recent loss of the school by fire, the newly-elected School Committee has held two special meetings to deal with the situation. At the first the secretary reported that he had been in communication with the Education Board, and subject to the approval of the Hall Commitee, which was obtained later, he had made all arrangements for the carrying on of the school in the hall by the following Monday. The main item, that of heating, would be attended to by the board’s architect who had already been out to inspect the building. At the second meeting it was reported that matters were proceeding smoothly and that the children were working well under their new conditions. The heaters appeared to be satisfactory and sacks were being placed on the floor to exclude draughts and protect the surface. The secretary said he had forwarded an application for a new school and arrangements were made for holding a concert early in the next term to raise funds for the school. On Saturday afternoon a working bee was held in the school ground to clear up the debris left by the recent fire. There was a good attendance of willing workers and in a short time the rubbish was removed and the hedge cut, greatly improving the appearance of the site. Afternoon tea was provided by the wives of the committee members and a few other ladies. The school chimney which seemed intact, was left standing, but the gale of Sunday afternoon loosened some of the bricks and the whole edifice fell, scattering the old school site with loose bricks.
