BALFOUR NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) The attendance at the hockey ball last Wednesday evening was disappointing, but notwithstanding the small crowd, the evening proved a social success. The Footwarmers’ orchestra supplied the music, and Mr H. Dawson, M.C., gave patrons good value for their money. A lucky spot dance was won by Miss H. Dillon and Mr N. Kerr, and a waltzing competition by Miss J. Wilson and Mr D. Bruce. On Friday evening the card tourney conducted by the local Plunket Society was fairly well attended. In the euchre tourney three ladies tied for first place, Mrs A. Rasmussen eventually being the winner. Mr D. McDonald had a straight-out win in the men’s section. Mrs Keir and Mr E. Stalker secured the consolation prizes. The prizes for cribbage were won by Mrs M. Rasmussen and Mr J. H. McMath. Tlie Balfour- and Dipton ladies’ hockey teams met on the local playing area on Saturday afternoon, and the visitors scored their first win in club matches for a number of years. This team are to be congratulated, because despite repeated defeats they have always fulfilled their engagements, some of which meant travelling long distances. The final scores were B—4 in favour of Dipton. For the winners Miss J. McDonald shot three goals, Miss E. McDonald two, Miss M. Mclntyre two, and Miss K. Goble one. Balfour’s goals were shot by Miss J. Wilson (3) and Miss V. Scobie (1). Mrs F. W. McDonald was referee. The local first fifteen travelled to Athol on Saturday afternoon and suffered defeat at the hands of Country Pirates by 18 points to 8. The home team had the advantage of a strong wind in the first spell and ran up 12 points. In the second spell honours were more even, Balfour scoring 8 to Pirates 6. Mr M. Reidy was the referee.
