PRENDERGAST DEFEATS McEWAN. KNOCKOUT IN SIXTH ROUND. At Tuatapere on Saturday evening Frank Prendergast, of Invercargill, knocked out George McEwan, middleweight champion of New Zealand, in the sixth round of a scheduled 15 round bout. The contest was not for the title. There was a big attendance which practically filled the hah. McEwan scaled list 41b and Prendergast list 21b. The fight was refereed by Mr A. Tall and the judges were Messrs W. Gellately and C. Dixon. In the opening rounds McEwan took the lead and was well ahead on points up to the fifth whed Prendergast, fighting strongly, began to score freely. In the sixth round Prendergast first dropped McEwan for “nine” with a solid left to the jaw and a minute later for the full count. It was a good fight full of action. After the contest Prendergast advised his willingness to fight McEwan for the title at Invercargill. It is probable that this match will be arranged by the Southland Boxing Association in about foui- weeks’ time. The preliminaries resulted as follows: Lightweight. P. Maaka (Invercargill) beat J. Sheehan (Tuatapere). Welterweight. G. McKay (Tuatapere) beat R. Neame (Invercargill). J. Breen (Tuatapere) beat Boy Glendinning (Tuatapere). HEAVYWEIGHT. P. Smith (Tuatapere) beat G. Hibbs (Otautau). Mr G. Rogerson judged the preliminaries. Two midgets from Nightcaps, Boyle by name, gave an entertaining display which delighted the crowd.
