HOCKEY

SATURDAY’S GAMES. LADIES’ AND MEN’S COMPETITIONS. Both the ladies’ and men's competitions were continued at Queen’s Park on Saturday afternoon in fine but colc weather. Notwithstanding the recent rains, the playing surfaces, though slightly on the heavy side, were in general good order and some interesting games were witnessed by the sideliners, . MEN’S SECTION. A GRADE. Central B asserted their supremacy over Civil Service B on the Doon street ground by six goals to two. Tarr, in the Central vanguard, led the White forwards on many an aggressive movement and he scored four goals, Jackson and Robertson also each finding the net. Lithgow gained both of Service’s scores. Mr J. Wren controlled the game. Collegiate B offered a particularly stubborn defence to Central A, who, however, emerged as victors by seven goals to nil. The Red rearguard gave no quarter but time and again stemmed the bustling Central vanguard attacks only to find the Whites too aggressive. Waddell and Robertson were the pick of the Collegiate forwards but the Reds lost several opportunities through wild passing, Lockhart (5), Howard (1) and Hughes (1) scored for the winners.

The most important game of the afternoon was the clash between Collegiate A and Civil Service A, which developed into an exciting contest for supremacy and was full of incident throughout. Collegiate were without the services of Lindsay, their sound centre-half, but nevertheless they appeared to be always slightly superioi to their opponents and the final score o f 2—l in favour of Collegiate was a fair indication of the run of the play. Rigby took Lindsay’s place, Hodgson moving up to the halves and Dickson, in turn, taking the latter’s place. At the outset both elevens played a man short but were at full strength soon afterwards. Rennick and McKelvey headed a series of Service attacks only to find the defence of Rigby and Hodgson sound. Then Collegiate endeavoured to evade the defence but with little success, Deacon and Gee being too safe in the Civil Service rearguard. Stirling, a host to himself in the Collegiate half line, gained considerable ground and, the ball beating Roberts, Shields picked up smartly on the right wing. He centred well and Chisholm connected well to find the net. Just on half-time, Service equalized when Rennick, receiving from G. Anderson, passed to C. Anderson, who scored with a hard shot. Half-way through the second spell, Hodgson pulled up McKelvey and Rennick sent the ball up to his forwards. Shields received from Stirling but his hot shot was well saved by Taylor. Amid excitement, Boyd next shot only to see Taylor again clear. Shields, however, darted in and found the net. The score was unaltered when the final whistle blew. Messrs J. M. Davies and L. Holmes refereed. B GRADE. High School A proved superior in all departments in their match against Collegiate C, who, playing short, went down in defeat by 12-nil, the half-time score being six-nil. Poole, who was aggressive throughout, found the net on six occasions for the winners while Kennedy (4), Taylor (1) and McLean (1) added further to the score. Mr H. S. Gordery was the referee. Central C and High School B fought a drawn game, play being even practically throughout. There was no score at half-time but in the second spell each side netted once. Central had the advantage both in age and weight but School was helped by the fact that the opposing eleven took the field with only eight men. Gray scored for School and Nelson for Central. Mr J. D. Gregg refereed. LADIES’ SECTION. Three matches were played in the ladies’ competition, most interest centering in the tussle between Collegiate A and Union, which went in favour of the former eleven by three goals to one. Ex-High A defeated their . B mates by 9 goals to two while Technical college drew with Collegiate B, one all. A Hard-fought Game. As an A team, Union, last years champions, were outclassed in their game against Collegiate B, who won the match by three goals to one. The absence of Rita Burt, Southlands left full-back, necessitated a reshuffling of the Union eleven, E. Hope going back to the vanguard. The Collegiate vanguard showed a combination superior to that of the opposing attacking unit, and, the Green halves also lending every support both on attack and defence, had an advantage over their rivals. As individuals, several of the Union team by no means were shaded by the Collegiate players in similar positions but the short passing rushes initiated by • the Green vanguard, each member of which was accustomed to the other s play, found the defence frequently caught out of place. B. Robb was a host in herself in the Union rearguard and time and again repulsed dangerouslooking attacks while M. Balch was the pick of the forwards. E. Murray gave a promising showing between the Union goalposts. Both the Collegiate fullbacks (K. Breen and M. Dawson) were generally sound while the halves fed their forwards generously. The vanguard showed penetrative capabilities and each forward worked well, E. Bell being perhaps the most outstanding of the quintet. A stubborn Union defence was responsible for making play very even until well after half-time but in the dying stages of the game the superior combination of the Greens harassed the opposing rearguard and Collegiate were more than holding their own towards the end. The return match between these two elevens should-be well worth witnessing. The teams were as follows: — Union: E. Murray; E. Hope, K. Wright; B. Robb, B. Simpson, V. Robb; M. Sandri, K. Hodgetts, M. Balch, E. Todd, E. Darlison. Collegiate A: O. Stott; M. Dawson, K. Breen; H. Myers, B. Thomas, M. Smith; M. Mclntyre, E. Smith, E. Bell, I. Rewcastle, D. Gray. Union attacked at the outset, weak clearing by M. Dawson letting the vanguard into the circle. M. Mclntyre relieved the situation with a dash down the left wing but B. Robb held her up and sent the ball to M. Balch who, with M. Sandri close at hand, went right through. The ball came out to M. Sandri who found the net but she was just outside the circle. Union kept up the pressure and Collegiate conceded a corner in the face of a determined attack by M. Balch, E. Todd and E. Darlison. Play ranged up and down field for a period, E. Smith working hard in the Collegiate forward line only to find B. Robb and E. Hope safe. K. Hodgetts made a solo burst through but was poorly supported and K. Breen cleared strongly. K. Wright found safety at the half way flag when E. Smith, E. Bell and I. Rewcastle approached dangerously and M. Balch, playing an aggressive game, evaded the defence to send in a hot centring hit. A. glorious opportunity to score went astray, when E. Todd, K. Hodgetts and

M. Sandri, each in turn, failed to connect with the ball. H. Myers and B. Thomas then sent their forwards away, I. Rewcastle actually finding the net but the whistle had just blown for an infringement. The Greens pressed strongly and E. Murray, the Union goalie, was prominent in saving on two occasions. A melee took place in the circle and E. Bell found the net. Collegiate 1, Union 0. Shortly afterwards, the Collegiate centre-forward, receiving from D. Gray on the right wing, scored again. Collegiate 2, Union 0. B. Simpson sent M. Balch away and K. Breen tackling on her wrong side saw Union awarded a penalty comer. M. Dawson saved by hitting over her back line and another corner was granted. E. Bell temporarily relieved but M. Sandri brought play back again and Collegiate were kept busy on defence. The ball came out to M. Balch who, from a difficult angle, scored with a hot shot half time being sounded immediately afterwards. The second spell was sternly contested, a hard-working Union rearguard just managing to keep the attackers at bay. However, the Yellows launched several aggressive movements only to find them break down before the sticks of K. Breen and M. Dawson, who were very safe. E. Hope, who had played a sound game as Union’s left full-back, had to retire owing to cramp. In the dying stages, Collegiate more definitely began to assert the ascendancy and, following a combined forward rush, E. Smith sent in a hot shot. The goalie partially saved but before she could recover E. Bell, following up well, netted. Collegiate 3, Union 1. I. Rewcastle nearly added a further score when she went through the defence on her own but failed to connect at the critical moment when taking her hit. The final whistle saw no alteration to the score. Mr F. Hinton controlled the game. TECHNICAL v. COLLEGIATE B. Technical College fought a drawn game with Collegiate B, the play, though ragged at times, being fairly interesting. Technical settled down better than in their first game the previous week and showed themselves as an eleven of promise. Several times their vanguard was within scoring distance but a stubborn defence kept the forwards at bay. D. Boyle, in a bright piece of work, enabled Technical to open their scoring account when she brought the ball down from half-way to see a tussle take place in the circle. Miss Scott (right wing) was handy and found the net. In the second spell, play ranged up and down field. Collegiate made determined efforts to equalize in the last 10 minutes, W. Nutsford eventually finding the net. There was no further score, the game thus ending one-all. N. Bell and W. Cranstoun were the outstanding Collegiate players while D. Boyle was the pick of the Technical team. Mr V. Taylor controlled the game. EX-HIGH A v. EX-HIGH B. Ex-High A’s match against their , B team-mates was virtually a practice game, the A team winning by nine goals to two. Both sides played short in number. For the winners, L. Heaps (6), L. Fraser (2) and W. Belsham (1) scored while E. Couling and N. Woods netted for the B side. Mr H, S. Cordery was the referee. WYNDHAM CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING.
