WOMEN’S DIVISION

WEST PLAINS BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the West Plains branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held on Wednesday, May 3, was well attended, Mrs Fosbender presiding. A lengthy discussion took place on the cookery book, Mrs Lokan explaining that when the books were ordered by the branch, they had to be paid for within a month; hut if ordered individually the branch lost the commission. Mesdames Tuckey and Officer were appointed advisory members, it being explained that Mrs Russell, of the In-

vercargill branch, would give all information to the advisory board regarding the housekeepers’ department. Mrs Fosbender donated the canvas for a rug, each member on the payment of an entry fee of 6d. to work a small portion, the rug eventually becoming the property of one person in a manner to be arranged. Mrs C. Ward, of Awarua Plains, was invited to give a rug-making demonstration at the June meeting. - A competition—any article made from material costing not more than 1/—i s to be the Subject at the next meeting. Marks are to be awarded, this being the first of a series of competitions to be held throughout the year, the member gaining the highest aggregate of marks to be the winner of a prize donated by the branch. The exchange table has become established and Mrs Lokan attends to this department. After some specimens of sugar bag work had been exhibited, the roll call, sing, say or a penny pay, was taken and was responsible for a great deal of talent and merriment.
