PLANE DAMAGED
FLYING IN RAIN SQUALLS. SMASH WHILE LANDING. (Per United Press Association.) Dannevirke, April 22. About 5 p.m. yesterday in good weather Flying Officer J. Buckeridge and H. Preston (ground eningeer) of the Wairarapa-Ruahine Aero Club left Akitio (Dannevirke), the former flying a privately-owned machine and the latter a Wairarapa Club’s plane. The journey to Dannevirke usually occupies 20 minutes, but en route they encountered heavy westerly winds and rain squalls. Darkness came quickly and the planes separated. When over the Waitahora Valley, a few miles from Dannevirke, Preston decided to land on the first available paddock. In landing the machine touched the ground while still in a partial side-slip, the under carriage being carried away, the centre section of fittings and one wing being damaged. The pilot was unhurt. The machine was dismantled and shipped on a lorry to Masterton to-day. Buckeridge arrived safely at Dannevirke and landed in the dark at the local aerodrome.
