PRIZE GARDENS
JUDGING COMPLETED THE RELIEF WORKERS’ PLOTS RESULTS ANNOUNCED Judging was completed yesterday in the competition promoted by the Invercargill Gardening Committee for the best-kept home gardens and community plots of relief workers. The arduous work of adjudicating was performed by Mr John Lennie, who, accompanied by the chairman of the committee, Mr J. D. Gilmore, had to inspect 122 home gardens and community plots. So thoroughly did Mr Lennie carry out his task that it took him three and a halt days to make his final selections. In that time he and Mr Gilmore travelled well over 100 miles.
“The gardens and community plots speak volumes for the type of men who entered for the competition,” stated Mr Gilmore to a Southland Times reporter last evening. “It was quite a treat to see such well-kept and productive gardens. Most of the men had gone in for a great variety of vegetables all , of which were growing luxuriantly. , I could not help coming to the conclusion that the vast majority of our relief workers are hard-working, earnest men. I hope the public will visit some of the community areas, particularly those in Gala street and Queen’s Park. We were most fortunate in securing Mr Lennie, of the Department of Agriculture, as judge. He carried out his duties most conscientiously. It was gratifying to the committee that throtigh additional donations it was possible to award more prizes than was originally announced.” The results of the competition were as follows: — Home Gardens. H. Mayhew, 38 Fox street, 52 points, 1 (£3 10/-). J. D. Tippet, Ethel street, Newfield, 51 points, 2 (£2). P. S. Willis, 86 Don street, G. H. Lines, 451 Tweed street, J.
