Mr W. Fraser arrived in Invercargill from Timaru by the express last evening. Mr H. W. Sherrills, of Napier, is at present on a holiday visit to Invercargill. The East Gore School Committee has approved of the proposed appointment of Mr B. A. Hanning to the position of second assistant at the school. Mr Hanning is an ex-Otago representative hockey player and a prominent cricketer. Firemen H. A. Paterson, N. F. Bryce and M. C. Maynes, of the Central Fire Station staff, who recently sat for the membership examination of the Fire Brigades Officers’ and Members’ Institute, have succeeded in gaining passes according to advice received by the superintendent (Mr F. Simpson). Only three candidates entered from the local station. Mr H. W. Lea, A.M.A.S.C.E., arrived in Invercargill by, the express last evening. Mr Lea, who is a son of Mr and Mrs A. E. Lea, of Invercargill (formerly of Ocean Beach) has just completed an 18 months’ tour of England and America in pursuance of his studies in engineering. He is an old boy of the Southland Boys’ High School and graduated at Canterbury College. The death is announced of Sergeant Charles F. McGlone, of Westport. The deceased, who was 62 years of age, was appointed a constable in 1897. He was stationed in Dunedin for a number of years, and was then transferred to Orepuki. He was in charge of the station there until his promotion to the rank of sergeant in 1912, when he was shifted to Dunedin, after which he was transferred to take charge of the Clyde district. He was in charge of this area for some nine years; afterwards he was appointed to the control of the Westport station, where he was engaged until the time of his death. Sergeant McGlone was one of the best-known of the earlier constables in Dunedin, and was a very popular, conscientious, and painstaking officer.
