DISTRESSING FATALITY

CHILD DIES FROM BURNS. The death as the result of bums occurred in the Southland Hospital at an early hour yesterday morning of the 2j-year-old son of Mr and Mrs P. Greener, Gore street, Bluff. The child was put to bed as usual on Tuesday evening, a candle and a box of wax matches being left on the mantelpiece close to the child’s cot. It appears that the child obtained possession of the matches and set fire to its clothes and the bedding. The child’s cries attracted its parents and Dr. Stewart was immediately called in. He ordered the little sufferer into the Southland Hospital, but death occurred early yesterday morning. Mr Greener is the engineer on the Stewart Island ferry steamer Tamatea. The inquest was opened yesterday before the Coroner, Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., and was adjourned sine die.
