IN TOWN AND OUT

NEWS OF THE DAY. Pounawca Camp. The arrangements in connection with the proposed camp for anaemic children to be held at Pounawea next month are well advanced and the committee is doing its utmost to ensure the success of the holiday. Blankets are still badly needed and, if any well-wishers are in the position to lend them they are asked by the committee to notify the secretary, Mrs E. V. McKeever (’phone 731), who will arrange for them to be collected. * * * ♦ Fires in Invercargill. Since November 21 the City Fire Brigade has attended five calls in Invercargill. The calls were to one chimney fire, one dwelling (slight damage to building and contents), one hedge and fence (slight damage), one motor garage (severe damage to buildings) and contents and one hotel (slight damage to contents of one room). ♦ * ♦ ♦

Fire Brigade Thanked. Thanks for the manner in which the City Fire Brigade had answered a call to his residence in Ythan street recently was conveyed in a letter from Mr W. T. Gilbert received at yesterday’s meeting of the Invercargill Fire Board. “The call was answered promptly and the fire was immediately extinguished with a minimum of water and the rooms were left clean,” stated the letter. “Their quick action saved a big loss to the insurance companies and minimized the discomfort of my family. In my young days I was a member of a volunteer brigade at Bendigo and I acknowledge that modern methods beat ours, when we were slow in getting to the fire and used plenty of water when we got there.” “It’s always pleasant to receive acknowledgments like this,” remarked the chairman (Mr E. B. Pilcher). Cruise of the Vilcehi.

Since she called in at Bluff early this year the American yacht Vileehi, owned by Mr Hiram T. Horton, of San Diego, California, has made considerable progress with her world cruise. According to the latest advice the yacht arrived at Cape Town at the beginning of last month. The Vileehi arrived at Auckland on October 24, 1931, after a four months’ cruise of the Pacific, Mr Horton being accompanied by Mrs Horton and. their daughter, Miss Lee Horton. On December 1 the party left by the Malolo in order to spend Christmas at their home at San Diego, the Vileehi remaining at Auckland in charge of the crew. On February 20 this year they returned by the Mariposa, their yacht having been cleaned and painted in the meantime. On February 25 they left in the Vileehi for Russell, and then visited southern ports, including Bluff and the West Coast Sounds. Subsequently they sailed for Sydney, where they arrived on March 29. Before leaving Auckland Mr Horton had not definitely decided his future movements beyond the fact that he intended to cruise along the Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of Queensland. While in Sydney, however, Miss Horton became seriously ill, and later, with her mother, returned home to California. They passed through Auckland on the Monterey on July 5, when they stated that Mr Horton, accompanied by a number of American friends, had left Sydney for Thursday Island, intending to voyage round the world. He had planned to visit the East Indies and India before continuing the cruise round the Cape of Good Hope. From there he intended to cross the Atlantic to Brazil and proceed home by way of the Panama Canal. According to the latest reports, it is expected that the voyage will be completed some time in February, when the Vileehi will have covered 30,000 miles.
