LIMEHILLS NOTES

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held in the Limehills Hall on Tuesday evening, the president, Mrs .Walker, presiding over an attendance of 33 members. The meeting opened with the institute song and the reading of the creed. A bring-and-buy sale was held, the proceeds to be forwarded to the Southland Federation. An exceptionally fine display was exhibited by the 13 entrants in the competition. Best vase of spring flowers—The prizes were awarded as follows: Mrs W. A. Nicoll 1, Miss Combes 2, Mrs.F. Clapp 3. A playlet entitled “Between the Soup and the Savoury” was rendered, the parts being admirably taken by Misses Cawley, Wilson, and Crowe. It is intended to continue play-reading at future meetings, as it proved a particularly interesting innovation. The programme for the next meeting will include roll-call “My Favourite Hobby”; competition, “Mannequin Parade,” dress not to cost more than 5/—, and demonstration, “Cake Icing.” The annual picnic of the Central Bible Classes was held on Labour Day. Over 100 students participated, including representatives of Otapiri, Winton, Lochiel, Oreti, Drummond, Browns, Dipton and Fernhills schools. The day, which was perfect, was spent at Otapiri, when the majority essayed to climb “Ben Bolt” Hill. The Centre Bush students were hostesses. A refreshingly optimistic sign of the times is the increased activity at the Centre Bush Limeworks. For some time past this mill has required to work three shifts of eight hours daily in order to cope with orders. This company has lately installed an automatic feeder in the furnace of the drying department with distinctly successful results.
