WAIKAKA NOTES

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING. (From Our Correspondent.) At the monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute which was held last Friday evening, Mrs D. McKenzie presided over a good attendance of members and some visitors. A motion of sympathy with the family and relatives of the late Mr W. F. Bennetto, who had been for many years a highly-respected -resident of Waikaka, was carried in the usual manner. The remits for the half-yearly meeting of the Southland Federation were discussed and Mrs Rennie was elected delegate to attend a meeting to be held in Gore on November 15. Members responded very well to the roll-call “Uses of Vinegar.” Suggestions were offered for subjects for next year’s Home Science boxes. Miss O.

Rankin won first prize in an apron competition. After business had been dealt with community, singing was enjoyed and recitations given by Miss Benfell and Mrs Styles, while Miss Johnson and Mrs Payne contributed solos. A vote of thanks terminated a very enjoyable evening. During the past tew weeks very enjoyable weather has been experienced and farmers throughout the district are getting well ahead with their work. On Saturday afternoon, however, heavy rain fell, accompanied by thunder and lightning. Owing to the rain it was impossible to finish a tennis match against the Heriot B team. Heriot were leading by six sets to two sets when it was decided to stop playing.
