SCHOOL COMMITTEE. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Mataura School Committee held on Tuesday evening was attended by Messrs W. Buchanan (chairman), J. K. Brewster (secretary), T. Major, T. Richmond, H. B. Heaps, L. McKelvie, T. Gaudm, J. H. Clark and the headmaster (Mr F. N. R. Downard). It was resolved that the thanks of the committee be extended to the Southland Frozen Meat Co., Ltd., for its donation of manure for use m the school gardens. . . Acting on a suggestion contained in the headmaster’s report, it was decided to make application to the local Unemployment Committee for a man one day a week to cut and trim the lawns. , . The headmaster’s report was as follows: The total roll number at the end of the month was 314, an increase of two, with an average attendance of 298, which represented 95 per cent, of the possible. Mr S. Bringars had been absent on sick leave for a week as the result of a broken wrist. The grounds had been kept in good order. Improvements had been made in cleaning up and mowing the footpaths outside the hedge, the Unemployment Committee having provided a man for two and a-half days. The headmaster also suggested that another lawnmower be procured owing to the area of lawns to be cut. The report was adopted. The secretary was instructed to approach the School Improvement Committee with a view to this committee providing a new lawnmower. The chairman reported that he had been approached by the Railway Department relative to the annual school excursion. It was unanimously resolved that application be made for a train on Friday, February 3, 1933. It was decided to take a vote of the parents on the place at which the function should be held, the names to be submitted for voting upon being Bluff, Riverton, Orepuki and Colac Bay. Personal. Visitors to Mataura at present include Messrs John Mac Gibbon and John Penny, of Christchurch, and W. Robson, of Roslyn. Miss D. Hastie, a former resident of Mataura, is holidaying here and renewing acquaintances. Mr H. M. Quilter is’ spending his annual vacation with his parents, Mr and Mrs T. Quilter, Suburb street. Mr and Mrs T. G. Boyd and family leave Mataura by motor this week on six weeks’ holiday, during which time they intend visiting Blenheim, Kaikoura, Wellington and Palmerston North. Mr P. M. Clark, of the Bank of New Zealand, Dunedin, is acting as relieving manager of the Mataura branch during the absence of Mr T. Boyd on annual leave.
