WHIPPET RACING. (From Our Correspondent.) Favoured with splendid weather the Ohai Whippet fixture on Labour Day attracted a large attendance of the public including a fair contingent from Nightcaps, while a number of enthusiasts from Dunedin and Invercargill were present. Nightcaps owners were as usual well represented in the day s racing, Comedian and The Laird gaining second placings. An energetic committee had arrangements well in hand and the various events were run well up to schedule. Following are the results:— Sneddon Cup.—First heat: Mr L. Aitken’s Silver Febn (20yds) 1, Mr J. Duncan’s Comedian (15yds) 2. Also started: Otakaro (3yds), Black Star (17yds), Rendezvous (20yds). Won by two lengths. Time, 12 2-ssec. Second heat: Mr J. Won by one and a-half lengths. Tennis. Local competitors met with a good measure of success at the doubles tournament at Riverton on Labour Day. Misses M. Hunt and M. Kelly played good tennis and will contest the final of the ladies’ doubles with Misses Borland and Galloway, of Riverton, on a date to be decided later, while in the combined doubles final four club players in Miss M. Hunt and Cosgriff and Mrs Baird and Welsh will play off on the Nightcaps courts on Wednesday afternoon. A number of men’s ladder matches have been played recently. P. Welsh who has been showing splendid form has won his way to top place by defeating R. Burgess and J. Cosgriff. Thornbury A team were drawn to play at Nightcaps next Saturday in the opening club fixture, but have now withdrawn from the competition.

Personal. Miss M. Reid, Mataura, has been visiting Nightcaps for a few days as the guest of Mrs W. Jaggers. Miss M. Carmody, Gore, who has been spending a few days with her parents, Mr and Mrs C. Carmody, returned on Tuesday. Mrs D. Munn has been visiting her relatives in Kaitangata. Miss S. Purdue left on Monday on an extended trip to Australia. _ Miss M. Egan left for Waimate on Wednesday. Miss Latimer visited her parents in Balclutha at the week-end. Mr Leo. Klemick who has been spending a short holiday in Gore returned a few days ago. Mrs Cole, Miss D. Gazzard and Mrs W. Haines were week-end visitors to Nightcaps as the guests of Mr and Mrs H. Gazzard.

Miss R. Varcoe, Invercargill, has been visiting Nightcaps as the guest of Mr and Mrs C. Carmody.
