MATAURA NEWS

PERSONAL. (From Our Correspondent.) Mr and Mrs H. L. Mair of Invercargill spent Labour Day week-end in Mataura as the guests of Mr and Mrs A. N. MacGibboh, Kana street. Messrs A. McKay and H. B. Heaps, who have been on holiday in Central Otago, returned to Mataura by Saturday’s express. Lieutenant T. Scotney of the local Salvation Army corps who has been ordered three months’ rest on account of ill-health was accorded a farewell gathering on Tuesday evening when sincere wishes for her speedy return to health were expressed. Lieutenant Scotney will proceed to her parents home in Wellington to recuperate. It is not expected that a relieving officer will be appointed during her absence so that Captain Doran will continue in charge of the work locally. Mr J. W. Mair of Ross Place, Lawrence, is at present visiting relative? in Mataura. Rebecca Lodge. The installation meeting of the Mataura Rebecca Lodge was held on Tuesday evening in the Oddfellows’ Hall when there was an exceptionally large attendance of local members recorded. Visitors were present from Gore Lodge and Mataura Lodge No. 40 while D.D.G.M. Bro N. McLeod accompanied by his officers attended officially to conduct the ceremonies. The principal officers installed were N.G. Sister L. Robinson, V.G. Sister S. Redman, F.S. Sister E. McConnell, E.S. Sister R. Gordon. Fraternal greetings were conveyed to the lodge by representatives of the visiting orders after which an adjournment was made for a social hour when a toast list appropriate to the occasion was honoured. Shooting Match. At the local range on Labour Day the first round of the club’s championship was decided when a good attendance of members presented themselves. The match was fired from the 300, 500 and 600 yards ranges, the conditions for shooting being good although a fairly strong wind from the north-east made it at times somewhat, tricky. The top score was recorded by F. S. Parker, a junior shot and winner of last year’s R.S.A. Cup. After completion of the championship shoot, class firing was indulged in. Following are the details of the scoring;—

Church of Christ Conference. The Southland Churches of Christ congregations held their annual District Conference at Mataura on Labour Day, representatives from Invercargill, Gore and Mataura numbering 100 assembling in the chapel, River street The president (Mr J. H. Tyrell-Bax-ter of the local congregation) in an appropriate address cordially welcomed the visitors and trusted their stay would not only be enjoyable but profitable also. The business session commenced at 11.40 a.m. when several matters relative to their organization were considered The officers for the ensuing twelve months were elected, Mr J. Wood of Invercargill being made president. It was also resolved that the next Labour Day Conference should be held at Invercargill. The afternoon session was commenced at 2.15 p.m., a number of addresses being delivered whilst manv present joined in the discussions arising therefrom. Following are the subjects considered, the leader’s name being given in parentheses:— (a) The Church, its organization, message and mission (Mr Roy Blampied). (b) Inspiring the Church to spiritual power through the Eldership (Mr T. Pryde). . (c) Inspiring the Church to practical Stewardship through the Deacons (Mr J. Tyrell-Baxter). (d) Harnessing the potentialities of Women (Miss Agnes Blampied). (e) Individual responsibility in extending the Kingdom of God (Mr C. Richmond). The conference resolved that greetings and a motion of confidence and support to our Foreign missionaries should be recorded. Mr T. Pryde as mover and Mr W. McEwing as seconder, expressed gratitude for their efforts. The concluding session was the evening one commencing at 7.15 p.m when an inspiring address was delivered by Mr S. W. Lowe upon the subject “Measuring the strength of the Modern Church.” The speaker especially stressed the fact it was his considered opinion that its message, its teaching, and the life and character of the individual member and not necessarily its numerical strength which counted in the Church in these days. . During the conference the visiting delegates were hospitably entertained by the members and adherents of the local congregation.

Horticultural Society. The meeting of the executive of the Mataura Horticultural and Industrial Exhibit Society was held on Wednesday evening there being present Messrs J. H. Clark (president), A. Baineaves, J. J. Griffiths, J. L. Mitchell, F. N. R. Downard, R. Hutton, W. P. Thorn, A. N. Mac Gibbon, D. Russell (vice-presi-dent), J. Ingram (secretary), Mesdames W. P. Thom, W. Stewart and Miss Winning. Mr W. A. Grace, bulb specialist, of Wanganui wrote requesting list of names of daffodil growers in Mataura, in consideration of which he offered a donation of bulbs. It vzas resolved that the secretary be instructed to _ supply information and that the writer be thanked for his offer which will be accepted. The secretary of St. Saviour’s Anglican Church Bazaar Committee wrote applying for a reduction in the rent of the main hall for their forthcoming bazaar—Resolved that the committee regrets it cannot accede to the request Six applications were received for the position of caretaker, Mr William Duncan being appointed. The following reports from the various revising committees were considered and with minor alterations adopted:—Sections 1,2, and 3 Plants Cut.—Flowers and Floral Decorations. Section 4. Fruit, unaltered. Sections 5 and 6. Vegetables—open and amateur.—The committee were empowered to create one new section in lieu of the two at present shown in the catalogue. Section 9, Farm Produce. Adopted with the proviso that the exhibits in this class be from area of not less than one acre. Sections 7 and 8, Jams, Jellies and Miscellaneous.— Adopted in full. Section 10, Industrial. —Adopted in full. Section 11, Juvenile section.—Recommendations and additions to classes adopted.—Several matters concerning necessary urgent re-

pairs to hall were left in the hands of the secretary to have attended to. Tennis Match. Edendale met Mataura at the Mataura courts on Wednesday afternoon in glorious tennis weather and resulted in a win for Mataura by 10 sets (86 games) to 6 sets (81 games).
