THE HON. J. A. HANAN
ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF COM-
MITTEES.
(From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, October 7. The Hon. J. A. Hanan was to-day elected Chairman of Committees of the Legislative Council. Other candidates for the position which was rendered vacant by the death of the Hon. E. H. Clarke were the Hons. M. Fagan, W. H. Mclntyre and Colonel J. G. Smith. In congratulating Mr Hanan upon his appointment, Sir James Parr, Leader of the Council, said it was fitting that the office should go to one of the oldest Parliamentarians in New Zealand.
Sir Walter Camcross, Speaker of the Council, said that Mr Hanan had been a colleague of his for a great number of years. He was sure he would perform his duties faithfully and well. Mr Hanan represented Invercargill in the House of Representatives from 1899 to 1925 when he retired. He was a member of the MacKenzie Ministry and the National Cabinet during the war. He was elected to the council in 1926. Mr Hanan, who at one time held the portfolio of education, lias for many years been a member of the New Zealand University Senate of which he is at present pro-chancellor.
