An announcement that the customs resolutions giving effect to the Ottawa tariff pact would be presented to Parliament on Thursday next was made by the Hon. J. G. Coates in the House of Representatives this morning. Mr Coates, who at the time was tabling his official report of the proceedings at the conference, said that a supplementary statement would accompany the resolutions, the proposals of which would become effective as from Friday. Other Empire countries would simultaneously introduce alterations to be made to their tariff schedules.
Mr Coates suggested that the full debate on the conference results could take place when the Customs Bill confirming the resolutions adopted by the House was introduced at a later date.
“The proposals will be adopted?” inquired the Leader of the Opposition.. Mr Coates: Well I am not feeling nervous as to the outcome, neither is the Government.”
“It will be swallowed all right,” interposed Mr W. E. Parry. Mr Coates: A better expression would be it will be acclaimed. Mr Holland inquired when the Bill itself would appear. “That will be a matter of arrangement,” replied Mr Coates. “There will be no undue delay.”
