WORKING HOURS
ITALY FAVOURS REDUCTION. ABSORBING THE UNEMPLOYED. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Geneva, September 22. The governing body of the International Labour Office decided by 16 votes to 7 to adopt the Italian Government’s proposal to place on the agenda for the next sessioh of the conference the question of a universal 40-hour week with the object of absorbing the unemployed. It has also resolved to hold a preparatory conference at Geneva in January to consider the technical problems involved, and will communicate the conclusions to the governing body which will forward them to the World Economic Conference.
The British Government and the employers’ representatives voted with the minority, the former opposing the suggested procedure and the latter contending that there was no evidence that a reduction in hours would diminish unemployment.
