WELLINGTON ZOO

CLOSURE ADVOCATED. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 14. The closing of the Wellington Zoo as an economy measure is advocated by Mr Robert Semple, who, at a special meeting of the City Council, gave notice of motion to that effect. He said: “I see it is proposed to shoot some of the animals—to shoot the bull and feed it to the lion, then to shoot the lion and feed that to some of the other animals. I am seriously discussing the closing of the Zoo. It seems that some of the animals cost a lot to feed. The Zoo in the last five years has cost the city £17,000 and I say now, as I have always said, it is nothing more than a torture den for dumb animals.” Mr Wallace said the Zoo was not a credit to the city, and that he did not agree with a Zoo in any shape or form. The Mayor said the expenditure on the Zoo last year was £3300 and the revenue £l7OO, the actual cost last year being £l6OO.
