WAIKAKA NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) On Saturday the local junior football team journeyed to Waikoikoi to play the ’Koi juniors, who are the competition leaders. This match resulted in a defeat for the local team by 12 points to 3, but the scores are not a good indication of the game as the visitors put up a good fight and were holding their own for the greater part of the game. Owing to heavy rains the ground was very wet and, although the ball was hard to handle, the 'Kol backs initiated some good movements. During the match light rain fell, making it very unpleasant for the players and the spectators alike. During the first spell ’Koi scored a try and Aitken (Waikaka) converted a penalty. Although Waikaka were the lighter team, they gave the home side some hard work and it looked at times as though Waikaka would score. Until within ten minutes of the final whistle the scores were even, with Waikaka defending. Although putting up a good fight the visitors could not last and ’Koi piled up another nine points. Turnbull (Waikaka) played his usual good game at full-back, his excellent defence saving the side many times. Miller was the pick of the Waikaka forwards and led some good rushes which, however, were always stopped. For the winners tries were secured by C. McKenzie, Clem l ents, W. Reid and J. McKenzie. Mr W. Corcoran controlled the game. The entertainment committee of the Women’s Institute is forming a club to enjoy community singing, and for this purpose 16 people were present at the

school on Friday evening when the first meeting was held. Although the meeting was not largely attended the movement promises to be well patronized. It was decided to meet again next Friday evening when arrange-' ments will be made and in the mean- ‘ time books are being purchased. Those present spent a very enjoyable evening, Miss Johnston presiding at the piano. I Miss Yardley, Duntroon, is spending I a holiday with Mrs Asher. I Mrs McLeod is on annual leave and Mr W. H. Jones has taken up relieving duties.
