OTAUTAU NOTES

TOWN BOARD. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Otautau Town Board on Friday evening was attended by the following members: Messrs W. J. Wesney (chairman), J. Seatter, W. J. F. McCulloch, H. L. Chandler and D. C. McCrostie. Mr Chandler reported that there was no chance of securing a suitable pump at a cheap rate for fire fighting purposes, and it was left in his hands to inspect the hose and fittings and have same put in proper order. Mr McCrostie gave notice of motion that the following rates be struck for the ensuing year: A general rate of one penny, a special rate of threefarthings, and a hospital and charitable aid rate of one-farthing in the £ on the capital value. Sanitary rate: weekly service £2 10/-, fortnightly service £1 7/6. Refuse rate: 10/- per pan. The secretary Otautau Progressive League requested the board to communicate with the Southland Electric Power Board asking that the charred poles in Main street be replaced by new ones.—Granted. Mr L. M. Thomson, permanent secretary, Manchester Unity Lodge of Oddfellows, wrote that as they were fortnightly tenants of the supper room and rented the hall for two nights per year, he was of opinion that the 20 per cent, reduction should apply to the hall.—Request declined. Mr W. R. Ireland’s offer for the lease of the domain at £l6 per annum for a period of three years was accepted. Women’s Division. There was a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the Otautau branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union on Friday when Mrs Evans (president) occupied the chair. Mrs McLeod (delegate) gave an interesting report on the conference of the Southland executive. The second birthday of the branch was discussed, and it was finally decided that the function take the form of a social evening in August, the final arrangements being left in the hands of the committee. For the roll call that day members were asked to give useful hints, and the majority responded. Mrs McLeod kindly offered to give a demonstration at next meeting on “Fancy Butter Making,” this being accepted with thanks. Miss Wilson, Plunket nurse, forwarded a paper on “Plunket Nursing, which was read, and was much appreciated.—Mrs Saunders moved a hearty vote of thanks to Miss Wilson, which was carried by acclamation. After lunch the Home Science box on “Loose Covers” was opened. Several members brought their knitting and worked while the contents were being read. In response to the request for relief, made at last meeting, a number of members brought parcels of clothing, etc., while others gave donations of money. Oddfellowship. Members of various lodges paid an official visit to Aparima Lodge, 1.0.0. F, last week, when P.G. Bro. H. Bone acted as N.G. in the unavoidable absence of Bro. D. C. Southerland. P.G. Bro. C. D. Mills extended a hearty welcome to the visitors, and trusted they would spend an enjoyable and profitable time. Responses were made as follows: N.G. Bro. J. Buddle (Pioneer Lodge, No. 27), N.G. Bro. K. Campbell (Waikiwi Lodge, No. 95), N.G. Bro. T. Insall (Aroha Lodge, No. 11), P.G. Bro. S. Stewart (Royal Oak Lodg<-, Drummond), and C.P. Bro. A. C. Whitting (White Flower Enchantment, No. 4). P.D.D.G.M. Bro. Fiel, in a neat speech, gave the outstanding qualities belonging to the order, namely, centralization, which meant that no matter what occurred they had the whole body of Oddfellows to help them along. Complimentary reference was also made to the good work 'done in the cause of the order by the financial secretary (P.G. Bro. C. D. Mills) both in connection with the Aparima and Royal Oak Lodges, the history of which was given by Bro. Fiel. An adjournment was afterwards made to Mrs Stearne’s, where the visitors were entertained at supper, and a social hour was spent. Songs were given by Bros. Atkinson and J. Reidy, recitations by Bros H. Barrett (2), W. Connor and W. McKay, and accordeon and bones items by Bro. Atkinson. It is worthy of note that the latter was the senior Oddfellow that evening, having belonged 47 years to the order, and his entertainment was outstanding. Royal Oak Lodge visitors present were: P.G.’s Bros. D. Jones, G. Chilton, J. Lindsay. S. Stewart and D. Brown. Football. The junior match, Nightcaps v. Otautau, was played on the recreation ground on Saturday, when the visitors proved too strong a combination, and won by 20 points to nil. Mr A. Fisher controlled the game. Fairfax Notes. That the popularity of the dance club is increasing was evident at the extended evening, when a large attendance spent a very enjoyable time. Good music was supplied by Misses Green and Helm (piano), Miss Ashley (piano), Messrs Muir (cornet) and Poole (accordeon), while Mr T. Helm made an efficient M.C. At the fortnightly gathering of the Gropers Bush euchre tournament on Thursday night there was again a large and enthusiastic attendance. After several had played off the ladies’ prizes were won by Miss Mills and Miss Thompson (runner-up), and the men’s by Mr J. Agnew and Mr W. J. Robertson (runner-up). Mr T. J. Beck represented the local factory at the Dairy Conference at Dunedin, while several others made the trip for carnival week. Miss Cull has returned from a visit to friends at Orepuki.
