HIGHWAYS BOARD

DISTRIBUTION OF GRANTS. (From Our Correspondent.) At the meeting of the Winton Borough Council on I'riday evening, a letter was received from the Town Clerk of the Feilding Borough Council in connection with the Main Highway's Board special grants. He forwarded a resolution passed by his council stating that in the event of the Highways Board deciding to continue special grants to enable counties to make a percentage rebate of rates to county ratepayers, the board be requested to make similar grants to boroughs under six thousand population. The Winton Council was asked to support the resolution. Councillor A. Watson spoke in favour of supporting the resolution and remarked that the idea was right. A cross-table argument ensued between the chairman (Councillor W. Hamilton) and Councillor J. L. Lilico, when the latter remarked: “In six months’ time there will be no Highways’ Board.” The Chairman: What will take its place?

Councillor Lilico: It will be wiped out of existence. As far as grants are concerned you have as much chance of getting a grant from the board as Julius Caesar. Councillor A. Baird: I am of the same opinion.

It was finally agreed to support the resolution of the Feilding Council.
