STUD FAIR

SALE AT GORE LOW PRICES RULING. The second annual Stud Ram and Ewe Fair held under the combined auspices of the Gore A. and P. Association and the Gore Stock Agents’ Association took place on the Gore Showgrounds on Saturday. The Fair was well supported by breeders, Canterbury and North Island breeders being represented in the Southdown section. Many prominent and successful breeders of the Romney Marsh also had entries forward and taken all over the general quality of the offering was of a high standard. The attendance was large, but included only a limited number of buyers and these ■were not prepared to purchase except at prices which reflected the ’ marked change that has taken place in the stock market during the past year. Romney Marsh rams were the first to be offered, but the first lots met with little demand, lot 'after lot being passed. As the sale progressed, however, bidding became a little more spirited although in the majority of cases the prices offered did not come up to the vendors’ reserves and the lots were passed in. In some cases, where rams were of outstanding -quality- there was keen competition and fairly satisfactory prices were obtained. The top price paid was 26-Jgns for a one-shear ram bred by R. Yardley and Son, Heriot, from a Kippoch ewe. The same vendor received 16, 17 and 21gns for rams possessing the same breeding qualifications. J. Mosley and Son obtained 20gns for a oneshear ram the dam of which was bred by W. Matthews and the sire by W. Perry—two strains which have become popular with breeders. The general run of prices, however, was much lower ranging from 5 to 12Jgns. More than half of the offering was passed. Southdowns were even in less demand and the prices offering were with few exceptions not acceptable to vendors. The top price obtained for ewes was 3gns, other lots selling at from 11 to 2 llgns. Southdown rams also met with little, demand. A ram of particularly good type offered on account of 11. J. Andrew, Maheno, realised 18gns, this easily being the top-price for the breed. The sale was excellently organized and conducted, reflecting a great deal of credit upon the officials responsible. At the conclusion of the sale, Mr Hugh Smith, president of the Gore A. and P. Association, thanked the breeders for the manner in which they had supported the sale. He also thanked the buyers for their attendance and interest, expressing the hope that by the time the next stud fair was held conditions would have materially improved. Sales were:
