RIFLE SHOOTING.

CITY GUARDS CLUB. The City Guards Defence Rifle Club fired a competition for the season’s trophies on Saturday afternoon at Otatara, the ranges being 300 and 500 yards, ten shots being fired at each distance. The conditions were good for shooting, a good light with a fairly steady wind being experienced. At 300 yards A. Ford was top with the good score of 48, his card reading 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 4 5 4—48, J. Ure being second with 44. R. J. Timpany headed the list at 500 yards with 47 made as follows 55545553 5 5—47, G. Weir being next with 45. The best aggregate was obtained by A. Ford with 48, 44—92. J. Ure 44, 44—88 and R. J. Timpany 40, 47—87 filling second and third places. Following are the scores.

INVERCARGILL DEFENCE CLUB. The fourht monthly competition for the A. R. Wills Shield took place on Saturday, when five teams competed. The ranges were 300 and 500 yards, ten shots at each. The weather was cold, with a wind that veered from north to west. Some good scores were registered. At 300 yards A. Lyall headed the list with 46, made up as follows: 3455545555, while V. Lavelle, C. H. Wilson, S. Wall, W. Milley and A. W. Dia<>k made 45 each. At 500 yards A. Lyall, W. Milley and C. H. Wilson made 48 each, as follows—Lyall 5545545555,- Milley 5554545555, C. H. Wilson 5554554555. The shield was won by A. R. Wills’ team with a score of 356. W. Milley’s team was second with 349, A. Lyall’s team 348 being third. Following are the detailed scores:— A. R. Wills’ Team.

In conjunction with the shield shoot a match was fired between the Invercargill Club’s B team and a team from the H.M.S. Laburnum. The navy team were at a disadvantage from the fact that they used the open service sights, while the club men used the aperture, the club team winning by a good margin. INTER-CLUB MATCH. On the Waihopai green in an inter-club match Invercargill defeated Waihopai by

TE RANGI DEFEAT WYNDHAM. Four rinks from Te Rangi motored to Wyndham on Saturday afternoon for a friendly game. The green was in excellent order and the weather perfect. The game resulted in a win for the visitors by a narrow' margin. The following are the scores:—

It is hoped a return match will be played in the future. SWIMMING. LYALL BAY WINS PECK SHIELD. Wellington, March 12. The annual harbour swim for the Peck Shield was held on Wellington harbour this afternoon. The course measuring one mile and 1080 yards was from a launch off Taranaki street to Queen’s Wharf and to Taranaki street wharf twice. Fifteen started on the last lap from Clyde Quay wharf to Taranaki street wharf but only ten finished. t Out of 41 starters L. Peterson (Maranui) was the first man to finish, touching the Taranaki street wharf at 4.20 p.m. His time was 57min. Fastest time went to F. Ryan (Lyall Bay) who covered the distance in 50min. Lyall Bay was the only club to get four of its team home and won the shield.
