BOWLS

FIXTURE AT GORE WIN FOR SOUTHLAND. Four rinks from the Southland Bowling Club visited Gore on Saturday afternoon and played a friendly game against a team comprising players from the Gore and Hokonui Clubs. The game was played on the Gore Club's green, which was slightly holding after the morning’s rain, but was otherwise in good order. The game was played in a most friendly spirit and resulted in a win for the visitors by 26 points. Prior to the 'match the members were entertained at afternoon tea and they were subsequently the guests of the Gore team at tea. At the conclusion of play Mr W. Gee, president o{ the Gore Club,' extended a welcome to Mr D. 11. Thoi'nson, representing the Southland Bowling Centre, and to the visiting players. The local players, he said, appreciated the sporting spirit which had prompted the Southland Club to play a game at Gore, and although it had been somewhat difficult to raise a team to meet them, he felt sure that they had all enjoyed the game. Mr Gee also thanked the members of the Hokonui Club who had turned out to assist the Gore Club. Mr Manson replied on behalf of the visitors, and thanked the Gore players for their hospitality. He also extended a cordial invitation to the Gore Club to send a team to play on the Southland Club’s green on a suitable Wednesday before the close of the present season. Mr D. H. Thomson, on behalf of the Centre, presented the shield won by the Gore Club at the recent shield rink.competition and in doing so mentioned that Mr H. Graham, who had skipped the winning rink, had his name engraved on the first shield played for. He had also had his name twice on the previous shield, which had been won outright by the Bluff Club, and now had the honour of skipping the winning rink of the present, shield. That was an excellent record and placed Mr Graham in the front rank of Southland bowlers. Mr Gee suitably acknowledged the presentation. Mr Graham also replied and paid a tribute to the steady play of those associated with him in the shield rink. The detailed
