PARKS AND RESERVES

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT.

The following items were contained in the report of the superintendent of reserves to the City Council last evening: South Invercargill Domain: The fencing on this domain is completed. Where the domain borders a street line a permanent fence of totara posts and wire netting has been erected, but where bordering private property the fence in the meantime has just been repaired sufficiently to keep out stock.

Sandy Point Domain: It is expected to have all fascine work completed by Christmas, and then transfer the men to stumping on the endowments. On account of continued nor-west winds a tremendous amount of sand now lies on the beach waiting a favourable wind to lift it on to the big bight dune. Some 201 b. of lupin seed has been planted on the dune complex, immediately behind the big bight dune, and 201 b. on the gravel ridge facing the river. A fire break has been cleared round the experimental plot and fire notices have been erected. The large board giving details of the plot is being renewed by the Tramways Department. Seaward Bush Scenic Reserve: Work is proceeding of making this reserve safe from future fires. The old hauler well has been cleaned out (depth 27ft.) and two small wells dug inside the fence bordering Masons Road (depth 10ft.) The 35acre block to the west of the reserve and at present being let annually for grazing is now practically scrubbed and when burnt off the men will be shifted to stumping work. Stumping on Everett’s leasehold is now in full swing. Park: The main drains on the golf links are nearing completion and if arrangements can be made with the Cricket Association a start will shortly be made to drain the hockey grounds which cause much trouble in winter. There is still the new pathway to put down and the trees to be lopped on Elies Road. Routine work in both Park and Nursery is well forward. Bedding out is completed and the Park should be in a splendid condition by Christmas time.

This has been an exceptionally busy three weeks on account of the bedding out of annuals, and other plants for summer. The bulk of the plants numbering 35,000 are now planted leaving just a few odd areas to be completed.
