A meeting of the Wairio Athletic Society on Thursday evening was attended by Messrs J. J. Finn (president), G. W. Gardner, A. Ballagh, M. Forde, D. Forde, A. Forde, T. Valli, A. Valli, J. Telfer, G. Crammond, T. Genge, A. Genge, E. White, J. Barnsfield, R. Bates, A. W. Sherman, F. C. Miller and N. Bates jun.
The .chairman (Mr J. J. Finn) in presenting the report and balance-sheet, commented on the fact that the society had lost a valuable member since last meeting—Mr J. P. Forde, who had been an officebearer since its inception. He asked the members present to show their respect in the usual manner. The motion was carried. The balance-sheet showed a deficit from the previous year, but after some discussion it was decided to hold a sports meeting on January 9, and to include cycle and whippet races in the programme. The following officials were appointed: Patron, Mr N. Bates, senr.; president, Mr J. J. Finn (re-elected); secretary, Mr N. Bates, junr (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs G. W. Gardner, F. Boyle, J. Valli, senr., A. Ballagh, senr., S. J. Collie, T. Egan, C. Keen, J. Hogan, J. A. Steans, C. Rollo, T. Hoare, J. Mosley, J. B. Purdue and F. C. Miller; committee, Messrs J. J. Finn, G. W. Gardner, M. Forde, D. Forde, R. Bates, E. White, H. Barnsfield, J. Barnsfield, T. Richardson, W. Nisbet, A. Valli and N. Bates, junr.; starter, Mr J. J. Hogan; assistant starters, Messrs A. Valli, T. Egan and T. Hoare; timekeepers, Messrs W. Murdoch, F. C. Miller and C. Keen; judges, Messrs A. Ballagh, senr., G. W. Gardner and S. J. Collie; protest committee, Messrs J. J. Finn, C. Keen and S. J. Collie.
The final of the euchre socials in aid of the school funds was held in Gardner’s Hall on Saturday evening, when there was a large attendance. Miss N. Sherman and Mr G. Nisbet were the winners, while the runners-up were Mrs Gunn and Mr A. Ballagh. The aggregate prizes -were won by Miss N. Sherman and Mr R. Kirkpatrick. Rain is urgently needed, as the gardens and crops are in a bad way on account of the dryness of the season and householders are out of water. ,
Shearing is general throughout the dis.rict.
In view of the running season approaching quite a number of possible competitors are in training under the tuition of Mr W. Small, and it is expected that they will give a good account of themselves before the season has closed.
