OHAI NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.)

Withered pastures, dry gardens and low tanks tell of the continuous spell of dry weather experienced throughout the district. Members and intending members of the newly-formed Golf Club are taking opportunity of the dry spell and long evenings, and are busying themselves in converting what once were paddocks into first-class links. The enthusiasm of the members is revealed by the number seen every day making their way to the course. The new tennis court, which has been in course of construction for the past few weeks, is now nearing completion. Besides being a great asset to the club the laying of this court has provided work for the unemployed which has been most efficiently carried out under the supervision of Mr James Wilson. The physical culture classes conducted by Messrs J. Dodds and A. Nesbit are being well attended every night. The keenness and progress of the pupils fully repay the untiring efforts of the instructors.

A vast improvement is being made to the school grounds by the increasing of the small area of concrete on the east side of the building. This will provide the pupils with an excellent tennis court for the summer and an unrivalled basketball court for the winter.

Members of the ladies’ division of the local branch of the St. John Ambulance Brigade are making good progress with their course of first aid. The superintendent, Mr J. Mosley, has conducted the lectures.

On Monday evening, December 7, the Salvation Army held its annual concert in the Public Hall, when a good number attended. The Rev. Mr Ashworth, of Nightcaps, acted as chairman. All children attending the Army Sunday School were awarded prizes by Captain Baker. Following was the programme submitted: Opening chorus, the children; prayers, Lieutenant Drummond; Bible reading, Candidate Coster; dialogue, Nancy Thomson, Annie Fordyce and Lieutenant Drummond; recitation, Margaret McArthur; vocal quartette, senior girls; recitation, Shirley Urwin; instrumental duet, Lieutenant Drummond and Bandsman Roper; song, children; recitation, Irene Smith; moral music lesson, children; song, primary’ children; recitation, Lena Smith; dialogue, Annie Fordyce, Margaret Foster and Winnie Harding; recitation, Phyllis Wilson; vocal quartette, senior girls; instrumental duet, Lieutenant Drummond and Bandsman Roper; dialogue, senior party; recitation, Lieutenant Drummond; closing chorus, the children. At a meeting of the Ohai Domain Board, which took place on Thursday evening, December 10, there were present: Messrs W. J. A. McGregor (chairman), D. Gardiner, J. Broome, E. W. Hunt, and G. S. Langford. A circular from the Government relating to the insurance of the unemployed or other labour while employed by the Domain was received and dealt with. It w’as resolved that a recommendation be made to the Tennis Club to run a tennis carnival and fancy gymkhana in conjunction with the Domain Board, a half share of the funds to be treated as a repayment of a portion of the loan owing by the Tennis Club. It was decided to leave this in the hands of the secretary to arrange with the officials of the Tennis Club. It was also resolved that the board offer the County Council a site for a lorry shed and implement shed inside the entrance gates, also a place for pipes and boards, etc., during the pleasure of the board.
