DARING BURGLARS
HOTEL ENTERED SAFE CARRIED AWAY TAKEN THROUGH FRONT DOOR (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, December 14. Cool audacity was displayed by burglars who broke into the temporary premises of the Panama Hotel at the corner of Taranaki and Vivian streets between midnight on Saturday and two o'clock on Sunday morning, when they carried away a large safe containing £lOO, some valuable documents, and stole thousands of cigarettes, as well as several bottles of champagne, whisky and brandy. The plunder was the property of Mrs Hyde, licensee of the hotel. The safe, which would require at least two powerful men to lift it, was rolled on some bags, judging by marks on the floor, and then dragged out through the front door on to the footpath. It was then probably lifted on to a waiting motor truck. It is believed the thieves followed the usual practice and removed the safe to some unfrequented place in the bush or to premises away from the city where they can apply themselves to the task of forcing it open without attracting unwanted attention. Police investigations are proceeding.
