DECLINE 0F TRADE
CANADA AND NEW ZEALAND. MR DOWNIE STEWARTS MISSION. The Hon. W. Downie Stewart, Minister of Customs, will leave Auckland for Honolulu to-morrow to meet Mr H. H. Stevens, Canadian Minister of Industries, with a view' to negotiating a trade agreement. The curtailment of trade between New Zealand and Canada which became evident soon after the conflict over tariff relations began last year 'has reduced exports to only a small fraction of what they were formerly and has also greatly reduced importations from Canada. The decline in values, especially of exports, is far greater than the fall in the total trade of New Zealand. Following is a summary of the returns for recent years, together with those for
10 months of last year and this year. Exports. Imports. £ £ 1926 861,717 3,431,533 2,739,826 1927 1,666,598 1928 2,469,150 3,258,828 1929 3,353,975 4,792,820 1930 2,539,975 3,802,545 1930* 2,499,102 246,956 3,209,303 1931* 1,071,650 .♦Ten months,
