ANGLING COMPETITION. (From Our Correspondent.) The third competition of the Wyndham Anglers’ Club was held on Saturday afternoon on the Mimihau River, the bait being bare fly. The river was in fair order, although slightly discoloured, and good bags were secured, the total weigh in being 59 fish weighing 601bs Sozs. The results were as follows: J.- A. Munro 17 fish, 181bs llozs (10 per cent, off) 16 lbs 13oz, 1; A. R. Udy, 18 fish, 161bs 7ozs (10 per cent, off) 141bs 13oz, 2; J. G. Hayes, 15 fish, 151bs (10 per cent, off) 131bs, 8 ozs, 3; R. Robertson, 9 fish 91bs lOozs, scr, 9lbs, lOoz, 4. W.C.T.U. The annual meeting of the Wyndham Branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held in the Presbyterian Sunday School Hall on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs S. Shaw presiding over a good attendance of members. After routine business had been transacted, the secretary, Mrs G. Wilson, read a report of the convention recently held at Invercargill, which was listened to most attentively. An appeal for funds was read from Willard Home, Palmerston North, to which the sum of £1 was donated, as well as 5/- to the headquarters fund, Wellington. The annual report and balance-sheet of the branch were then read and adopted, following which Mrs S. Shaw was re elected president and Mrs G. Wilson, secretary and treasurer. Tennis. The following team .will represent Wyndham Tennis Club in their matches to-day: A Grade: Townsend, Henderson, Johnstone, Traynor, Mfs Werry, Misses Vida Wilson, Allison and Bogue. B. Grade: Richardson, Wilkinson, Woodward, Larsen, Mesdames Porter, Barnett, Misses M. and H. Baird. Cricket. The following team will represent Wyndham Cricket Club in their match with Pukerau to-day: Davey, Robertson, Heath, Traynor, Milne, Johnstone, Mac Kay, Winter, Milburn, King, Beadle, Rout and Marshall. Scottish Society. The monthly meeting of the Wyndham and District St. Andrew's Scottish Society was held in the Masonic Hall Wyndham ■on Friday evening, when there was a large and representative gathering present. Unusual interest was centred in the meeting owing to the fact that Professor J. R. Elder, lecturer on history at the Otago University, was to give an address on “The Piper and Scottish Traditions.” In keeping with the sentiments of the professor’s remarks, the Wyndham Pipe Band, under Pipe Major W. Cochrane, played national music en route to the hall. Chief Halliday, who presided over the gathering, was accompanied to the stage by Chief J. L. McG. Watson, Invercargill, and Professor Elder, all being played in to their respective chairs by suitable bagpipe music. After having been introduced to the assemblage, the lecturer of the evening proceeded to give a lengthy and interesting paper on the subject in hand, incidentally referring to the bagpipes as being a very ancient instrument in Europe and Asia. On the vote of Past Chief Alex Ross a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Professor Elder for his able address, to which the recipient made suitable acknowledgement. During the evening items were contributed by Piper J. McDonald, Pipers W. Cochrane, J. A. McDonald, McLeod and Bain, Mrs A. Monagan and Mr D. Macpherson. Mr E. G. Macpherson played the accompaniments. Musical Society. The members of the Wyndham Musical Society staged a very enjoyable and successful operetta in the Wyndham Town Hall on Thursday evening, when there was a good attendance present. Those who took part in the play were as follows: ’Misses W. Metzger, Newlands, Malcolm, P. Winn, Claire Traynor, Iris Stark, D. Dynes, T.'Harper, D. Smaithwaite, J. Blackbum, Messrs F. Badle, H. Heath, R. Tutty, H. Kiddey, Masters Malcolm, Smart (2), Richardson, Harper and J. Robertson. Mr H. F. Hicks was stage manager, and Mr E. G. Macpherson musical conductor. Presentation. On Thursday evening Mr Frank Beadle was met by members of the Wyndham Musical Society in view, of his early departure, to sincerely thank him . for his much apprecited efforts in painting suitable scenery for the society’s entertainments. Mr H. F. Hicks as chief spokesman handed Mr Beadle a neat clock encased in oak as a parting gift, at the same time referring to the many fine qualities of the guest. After several others had spoken, Mr Beadle suitably replied. Farmers’ Union. The monthly meeting of the Edendale Branch, of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs R. K. McDonald presiding over a good attendance of members. The Home Science Bureau box list was opened and passed around for members to choose boxes for the year 1932. Mrs Townley then mixed an overnight Christmas cake, other members assisting with the preparation of the fruit.
