DWELLING DESTROYED
ANOTHER FIRE AT GORE
A NARROW ESCAPE. The second fire to occur in Gore over Easter destroyed a five-roomed residence in Halton street, East Gore, at 2.30 yesterday morning. Mr Donald McAskill, the sole occupier of the house at the time, retired at 10.30 on Sunday evening and was awakened in the early hours of Monday morning by the noise of something falling. On opening the bedroom door he saw the hall full of smoke and flames. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Mr McAskill jumped through the window in his night attire and hurriedly summoned assistance. When the brigade arrived, the fire had a strong hold and the west side of the house was practically destroyed. A good save of the eastern portion was effected, but considerable damage was caused by smoke and water. The fire apparently had its origin in the kitchen, where a fire had been left burning in the stove. The house is insured in the Northern Insurance Company for £425, while Mr McAskill’s furniture and effects were covered by a £250 policy in the Queensland office. / '
