WAIKAIA SPORTS

EASTER MEETING . A .SUCCESSFUL VENTURE. Favourable weather conditions prevailed when the Waikaia sports, always a popular fixture among local and visiting athletes, was held on the Recreation Grounds yesterday. A large contingent of visitors from Gore and surrounding districts was in attendance, the gate takings amounting to £39 6/-. The condition of the grounds was not conducive to good foot or cycle racing and the times registered in the various events suffered accordingly. If this aspect of the sports was remedied on future occasions it would prove an advantage to all concerned. From other points of view, however, the events were conducted satisfactorily, and run to schedule time. At the present time interest in athletics generally is reviving as was shown by the large proportion of Eastern district entrants, who completerl with varying success throughout the meeting. Mr E. Hamer, president, was a busy man throughout the proceedings. As superintendent of sports Mr W. Christie kept matters well in hand and carried out his duties with dispatch. The handicapping of Mr F. S. O'Kane left, nothing to be desired and was responsible for close finishes and satisfaction in the various events. Mr L. Stevenson, secretary, gave unsparingly of his services. Taken from every point of view the meeting was a success and reflects considerable credit on the various officers responsible for keeping proceedings going with a swing.
