IN TOWN AND OUT

NEWS OF THE DAY.

And The Chief Raved. On the southernmost city being mentioned, the northerner., said: “Invercargill! That’s where the gramophones play both sides of a record at once.” “How’s that?” asked his friend. “Well, those Scotsmen wear their records so thin that the needle picks up both sides,” was the reply.* Scotch Humour. A rather amusing motion was placed before last night's meeting of the Gore Borough Council when Councillor A. McLachlan moved that the “2” in a recommendation contained in the works committee’s report be deleted. The portion of the recommendation referred to read: “That the council contribute £2O The motion was seconded, but was defeated. * * » Band Rotunda at Gore. The proposal to erect a band rotunda at Gore was referred to by the Mayor, Mr D. L. PoppeWell, at last night’s meeting of the Gore Borough Council. The Mayor suggested that the wisest, course. for tho band to adopt was to ascertain the approximate cost of erecting the rotunda and to submit plans to the council. He was of the opinion that the band could raise a substantial sum by means of public subscription, to which the council would consider adding a subsidy. Meter Readings.

At last night’s meeting of the Gore Borough Council, Councillor F. Young inquired if the council had received any advice from the Southland Electric Power Board of its intention to read the meters in Gore every two months. He stated that the inquiry was made because of a complaint he had received from a consumer. If the board had decided to adopt' this policy, it seemed to him to constitute a breach of the agreement entered into with the council, The Mayor replied that no such advice had been received from the board. The question of the monthly or bi-monthly reading of the .meters was one which could only be decided between the board and the individual consumers. Radio Club And 4ZP. As a result of the recommendation of the arbitrators in connection with the agreement between the Southland Radio Club and Mr R. T. Parsons, the executive of tho club has been active in its endeavour to re-establish mutually satisfactory and cordial relations between the two parties interested. Mr A. W. Jones, president of the Radio Club, and two other members were appointed as a sub-committee to discuss all details for future broadcasting with Mr Parsons through 4ZP, and the report submitted to the executive by the sub-commit-tee was received and adopted unanimously. As a result of the experiences gained during the last few months it is stated that the executive committee can be greatly reduced in number without impairing its efficiency. A committee of three and a secretary will probably control the activities of the Radio Club in future.

* * * Possibilities Of Dunsdale Reserve.

Following a suggestion made by Councillor J. Gilkison, the Mayor, councillors and executive officers of the council, visited the Dunsdale reserve during the week-end. The reserve consists of 8,000 acres of land mostly covered in bush which, however is not of milling quality. At- present, the reserve is put to no practical use, and its attractions are little known to the. public. It was with the object of seeing its possibilities as a picnic reserve that councillors undertook the tour of inspection. The suggestion that it might also be used as an opossum farm was also considered and discussed. The proposal was mooted that possibly the City Council, to whom the reserve belongs, might work in with tho Acclimatization Society in the.appointment of a ranger who could look after the opossum trapping which, it was thought, would pay all the. expenses of the man who, in his spare time, might make suitable paths and clearings.
