OVERCOME BY SMOKE
FIREMEN EXPERIENCE NARROW
ESCAPE.
RESIDENCE TOTALLY DESTROYED.
(Per United Press Association.)
Wellington, October 20.
The ten-roomed residence of H. G. Rutter in Waterloo road, Lower Hutt, and its contents were totally destroyed by fire early this morning. The fire was discovered in the study which was entered by Superintendent Slinn and Fireman Hutton. They were soon in difficulties with the smoke and deputySuperintendent Doran and Fireman Wilson went to their aid. A strong wind blowing at the time slammed the study door, leaving the men in the dark and thick smoke. Doran managed to find the door, but by this time Slinn was quite overcome and unconscious and Hutton was little better. The sufferers were attended to by a doctor living next door and the City Ambulance arrived 14 minutes after being called for and took Slinn and Hutton to the Wellington Hospital. Slinn was badly burned as well as suffocated. Mr Rutter’s loss was a heavy one as he had added considerably to the value of the property recently without increasing the insurance.
