WOODLANDS NOTES
(From Our Correspondent.)
The Invercargill stock agents held their monthly stock sale in the Woodlands yards at Woodlands on Friday, when there was a fair attendance of farmers and dealers. Weather conditions were very unfavourable, a cold south-west wind was blowing, with several heavy showers in the afternoon. Although prices were on a par with recent sales it is depressing to those wishing to sell that the value in all classes of stock is not increasing, as is customary at this time of the year, and it means that many have wintered stock for nothing. The main causes are the backwardness of the season resulting in a shortage of feed and the continuing low level of prices for agricultural produce resulting in financial stringpney. Prices were: Sheep.—No fats or store wethers were yarded. However, there were several pens of ewes and lambs, prices for which reached 10/2 (all counted). This was obtained for a pen on behalf of Mrs A. Schmidt. A pen of fair wether hoggets realized 9/6 and a pen of good mixed sex hoggets 13/6. Cattle. —There were about a dozen pens of all sorts entered. The best prices were for dairy cows, which, sold on account of Mr W. Pierie, brought up to £l2 2/6. Others sold according to quality. A pen of good yearling mixed sex animals realized £4 1/-. Bulls sold up to £5. On Wednesday the local Young Men’s Club held its final dance in the Public Hall. There was a fair hou.se. Messrs D. Saxelby and G. Haydon acted as M-CTs. and Thompson’s Orchestra supplied the music.
